Eye of Judgment - or How I learned to Love the Innovation Bomb
When PS3 was first unveiled many moons ago one of the games that caught my eye the most was Eye of Judgment. The concept was fresh and the idea of using the Eye Toy for something more then waving your hands around looking silly was intriguing. The game was finally released this past fall and like most things related to Sony lately the pill is bittersweet.
The game itself is good, and if you are already a fan of CCG (collectible card games) then you can notch that up to great. Setting up the Eye Toy, starter deck, stand and playmat is a small chore. When you go to scan your cards under the Eye toy and see the characters on the cards come to life is where things start to go sour.
In order to read the cards the Eye needs just the right amount of light. Which translates to you need a lot of windows where you game or flood lighting. Playing at a friends house we actually needed a flash light to shine on the cards to get them recognized. Another problem I ran into during online play was the Eye reading the cards wrong. Laying a card down for the final blow facing an enemy card the Eye read my card as facing to the side instead losing my battle.
These are growing pains when taken into perspective as a new territory in gaming. Overall the game is a great investment to those that come from a Magic the Gathering or other CCG background. More companies need to take a look at this game as a basis for innovation with the Eye Toy and Live Vision and in my opinion has made a step forward in gameplay that is more innovative then anything i’ve seen with Nintendo’s waggle wand (yes I went there).

Yeah that lighting issue really needs a tweak. I’m not really a big fan of the Magic style card system, but the game is pretty fun for a little versus action. Although I don’t know that I’d call this “more” innovative than some of the Wii stuff, it’s certainly on par when it comes to providing more interaction with your on screen elements.
