Lost Odyssey Journal - A Wind Named Amnesia

Category: XBox 360

RPG’s are a very personal thing to me so I decided instead of doing a normal review for Lost Odyssey for Xbox 360 you will get my ongoing impressions on the game in a journal format. So you lucky readers get to feel every emotion and letdown the game has to offer as I do giving you immediate impressions instead of stale ones. I was expecting a lot of this game being an ambitious release from Microsoft and the father of Final Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi. So far i’m getting totally lost in this game, in a good way.

The game is beautiful. The opening battle and music just come together and draw you in perfectly. The game does this neat thing with cutscenes and comic book style panels showing multiple perspectives that really works. You have the option for different languages but I urge you to give the English dub a chance. Especially when you get to the character Jansen, just hilarious to listen to.

Gameplay is pretty standard RPG fare with a ring system setup. Anyone who has played Shadow Hearts on PS2 will be familar with this system, they are similar. You have to pull the right trigger and time this ring that closes on top of another ring to get perfect hits. I only have one ring so far that if you get a good or perfect increases your damage (think criticals) but it looks like there are alot of different rings so we will see as the game goes along.

There are some things that are questionable so far. First and foremost being the art design. Some are good and so far most of the monsters I have fought are great looking. The armies in the beginning though and guards in the city are just plain silly looking. To the point of wondering if it was a Monty Python skit.

Next is the whole amnesia thing going on with not only the main character but others. It might be cool to learn that Sakaguchi and the team played this card as an inside joke to anime and RPG lovers and how over the top it is in this game. I have a feeling they didn’t. Honestly it feels sometimes like i’m watching an episode of All My Circuits from Futurama. “We have suddenly came down with a severe case of…AMNESIA!” I couldn’t help but laugh at these scenes thinking about that.

This is just the introduction after about 2 hours so we will see how all of this pans out. So far i’m recommending this game but stick around as the journal and my adventures with Kaim continue. Who knows, we may end up with Jansen and his babe party in a lounge instead.
