PS3 - backwards compatibility update?

PS3 consoleThis morning, I sat down to finish the last 5% of Final Fantasy 12, which I’d been procrastinating on for…well, since it came out. Now it may be my post-new-year celebration mind playing tricks on me or lowered expectations following a spate of Wii gaming, but the game seems to look a hell of a lot better than I remember.

Initial PS2 compatibility was loathsome, and I know minor improvements have been made to get PS3 compatibility close to equal, but it looks downright superior. Textures are smooth, edges are crisp, geometry doesn’t appear as jumpy. A move to improve BC seems like it would be anathema to Sony considering that new units pouring off the line don’t support PS1/2 games at all.

What gives? Anyone else notice a change, or am I just looking through beer-goggles?

Alas my PS3 unit is not privy to playing the PS2 games. Although it seems silly that since the midrange units used a software emulator mine cannot.
