WiiFit sells a million in Japan - Godzilla can fit into bikini now

Category: General, Wii

So the numbers are coming in and looks like Nintendo has sold over 1 million copies of WiiFit in about one month of it being released in Japan. The set comes with the WiiFit minigame collection and the WiiFit balance board contraption and retails for about 80 usd converted.

I usually keep quiet on all things Wii, but this is just another reason why the Wii is not interesting me in the slightest. The more of these games that come out and sell big just makes it harder for Nintendo or third parties to justify sinking money into more epic games that aren’t mini game collections or gimmicky “Xavix” style gaming.

And yea I know the mantra circling is these games are just laying the groundwork and making money for companies to create epic games but thats been the mantra going on for almost two years now and nothing in the future lineup is proving that to be true. If anything the third parties are sinking the money from these games into other platforms and games like Ubisoft.

Being a huge fan of Japanese style games and RPG’s this is disheartening to see this move in Japanese taste. It’s not like Nintendo hasn’t tried for the accessories and gimmick path before with things like R.O.B. and the Power Pad for the NES. I’m sure they are all smiles to finally hit that jackpot with the Wii. And you can’t really fault them for taking advantage of the casual market and the Nintendo fans euphoric on a system selling well regardless of the games.

For the rest of us gamers that prefer more meat on our bones and games hopefully Japan will continue to throw us some scraps of JRPG’s, an occasional Final Fantasy and not downgrade every big franchise to the DS. Other than those I have to question if Japan will soon become an irrelevant black hole of mini games and licensed anime fighters.

Quick, move Capcom and Square-Enix stateside asap.

While this may seem disheartening for you jaded hardcore gamer types, as a fan of all things gaming I think this is great. I for one enjoy these new gameplay types, whether it be an interactive camera, or something so simple as a weight detecting balance board. But I do agree that this would never “replace” my main gaming routine, rather compliment it. From a marketing standpoint the Big N should partner up with NBC and Subway to ride their whole “fitness craze” with a tie in to Biggest Loser and American Gladiator quick for the big push with the US market.
